Cysts are fluid-filled sacs that can form on or inside the body. They’re often lined with cells that produce materials like keratin or sebum. While most cysts are benign and don’t need treatment, larger or problematic ones may require removal.
Here are some common types of cysts we treat:
Sebaceous Cysts
These cysts develop when sebaceous glands become clogged. They most commonly appear on the face, neck, and trunk but can also appear on the scalp, ears, back, groin, and genitals. Removal may be necessary if:
- The cyst becomes infected or inflamed
- It grows large enough to cause discomfort or affect appearance
- It’s at risk of rupturing
- It interferes with daily activities
Pilonidal Cysts
Often found near the tailbone, these are caused by hair trapping and can lead to infection. Removal is recommended when:
- Pain persists despite conservative treatment
- An abscess forms
- Non-surgical treatments, like aspiration or incision and drainage, haven’t worked
Epidermoid Cysts
These slow-growing bumps form beneath the skin. They can occur anywhere on the body, often on the face, neck, upper back, and trunk. They may also appear on the scalp, groin, buttocks, palms, and soles of the feet. Removal may be needed if:
- The cyst becomes infected, causing pain or swelling
- It grows large enough to cause discomfort or appearance concerns
- There’s a risk of rupture or irritation due to its location
Do You Need Cyst Removal Surgery?
Here are signs that it might be time to consider removal:
- Pain or tenderness, especially if the cyst is inflamed or infected
- Rapid growth or a size over 5 cm
- Redness or swelling around the area
- Discharge of fluid with an odor or unusual color
- Fever accompanying cyst symptoms (a potential sign of infection)
- Changes in the cyst's appearance, such as color or texture
- Recurrence after previous drainage
- Interference with daily activities or movement
If you notice any of these symptoms, it's important to seek evaluation promptly. Early intervention can prevent complications and ensure the best outcome.
Excisional Surgery: The Gold Standard for Cyst Removal
At Premier Surgical Network, we specialize in excisional surgery, the most effective method for cyst removal. This approach involves removing both the cyst and its wall, significantly reducing the risk of recurrence and ensuring a lasting solution. Excisional surgery is ideal for cysts of various types and sizes, offering precise, reliable results.
Other treatment options include:
Punch Biopsy Excision: Suitable for smaller cysts, this technique uses a small circular incision to remove the cyst.
Laser-Assisted Removal: A minimally invasive method with minimal bleeding, often chosen for cysts in cosmetic areas.
Drainage: Provides temporary relief by removing fluid from the cyst but carries a higher chance of recurrence since the cyst wall remains.
What to Expect & Recovery After Cyst Removal Surgery
Your cyst removal will take around 30 minutes. First, your doctor will numb the area with local anesthesia. Then, they'll make a small cut to remove the cyst and its contents. Depending on the size, you may need a few stitches to close the area.
After your cyst removal, keep the area clean and dry for 1-2 days. Avoid heavy exercise for two weeks to help healing and ensure the sutures remain intact. You can take acetaminophen for pain, but avoid aspirin or ibuprofen for the first 3 days. Watch for signs of infection like increased redness, swelling, discharge, or fever over 101°F. You'll need a follow-up visit in 10-14 days, but call us sooner if you have severe pain or signs of infection.
